Marie emigrated in 1866 to the USA. Her hometown was Haltern which is only 5 miles from Grambergen. So maybe, she knew her husband before she left for the States. The only sure fact is that her brother Eberhard who emigrated too, travelled on the same ship as Christoph Waldmann. Both went to Cincinnati. Until now, we couldn't find a ship list with Marie on it although her obit says that she came to America with her brother.
And here is a short story for family researchers. We only knew Marie's obit (see at the bottom) when we started to look for her family. We hadn't any idea where she came from in Germany and thought her brothers name was Edward (Eduard in German). We were sure that we didn't have a chance to find her for Hartmann is a very common name and Marie, too.
We went to the Morgensternmuseum in Bremerhaven which contents a database of German emigrants to look for Christoph Waldmann. We tried to find Marie, too, but there were hundreds of Hartmann and none fitted Marie or Edward. At the end, we searched for "E Hartmann" and were surprised to find an Eberhard Hartmann who was on the same ship as Christoph and came from our neighoring parish. Since Eberhard sounds much like Eduard we thought it worth a try to write a letter to the church of the parish Eberhard came from. A nice lady had a look at the church registers for us and it was a bull's eye. Eberhard had a sister Maria, born September 04th, 1849 and the names of the parents fitted, too.

Marie Elizabeth Waldmann, nee Hartmann, daughter of Mr. Johann Hartmann and Mrs. Anna Marie Hartmann, was born in Germany on September 4, 1849. In the year 1866, when she was 17 years old, she came to this country with her brother, Edward, and lived in Cincinnati, Ohio, for three years, after which she came to Fennymore. On April 19, 1870, she was united in marriage with Christoph Waldmann at the parsonage of St. Paul's church in Liberty, with which church they united as members. They established their home on a farm in Liberty township. Here they lived happily and labored strenuously for 40 years. Their marriage was blessed with nine children. One daughter, Augusta, was taken from them by death at the age of five weeks and a son, Charles, died at the age of 28 years. In the year 1915 they were able to retire and to move to Lancaster, where they found a suitable home located on So. Harrison Street. In this home Mrs. Waldmann lived seven years with her husband, who died Dec. 17, 1922, and seven years after her husband's death, until April 1929, when she made her home with her daughter, Mrs. Henry Kasper, with whom she shared joy as well as an abundance of sorrow during times of sickness and death, and where she herself always received the kindest consideration and experienced the best of care during her protracted illness.
In February, 1932, she suffered a slight stroke, due to high blood pressure, which confined her to a sickbed and in course of time, caused her much suffering, disabled her completely, and made her entirely dependent upon her daughter, who rendered her mother the most loving and heroic service during the long 16 months of illness. The assistance rendered and care given, for shorter or longer periods of time, by three other daughters gave evidence of a fine Christian relationship between mother and daughters. The long illness of Mrs. Waldmann was a fine example of the value of Christian faith and trust in God and a touching demonstration of the spiritual worth of Bible gems and Christian hymns, when committed to memory while young, as she has done.
Six weeks ago her illness was aggravated by a blood clot, and immediate danger of death seemed pending, she rallied and retained consciousness until a few days before her death. On Sunday, May 21st, at 3 o'clock in the morning, death ended her suffering. She reached the age of 83 years, 8 months, 17 days, and is survived by four daughters and three sons: Mrs. Henry Kasper of Lancaster, Mrs. Anna Johnstone ot Duluth, Minn., Hermann Waldmann of Liberty, Mrs. Herman Pieper of Hawkeye, Iowa, August Waldman of S. Lancaster, Emma Waldmann of Duluth, Otto Waldmann of Lancaster, eleven grandchildren, and one brother, Christ. Hartmann in Cincinnati, Ohio.
Funeral services were held at Bethlehem Evangelical church on Tuesday, May 23rd, at 2 p. m., Rev. J. L. Haack officiating, and interment took place in the Liberty cementary.
