Emigrants

List of all emigrants

There's a dedication on the back page of this photo

For my sister
A. Maria Probst

So the picture shows

Gerhard Heinrich "Henry" Probst
or his brother
Johann Friedrich Probst

(I think that it's Friedrich for Henry died in 1861 which is maybe a little early
for a photo.)

Heinrich "Henry" Probst was born October 13, 1806 in Darum, parish of Belm, kingdom of Hanover and he emigrated in 1834. His brother Friedrich was born September 20, 1811 (same place) and he followed his brother in 1837.

We searched for both of them for quite a while without success. Then we found some persons called Probst amoung the descendants of Henrich Wilhelm Wefel zum Felde who lived in Wisconsin. E. g. Hermann Heinrich Wefel married Maria Ann Probst about 1859 in Liberty Township, Grant County. Just pure chance?

While looking for Maria Ann's ancestors, we found that her father's name was Gerhard Henry. He died Feb 24th, 1861 in Lancaster at the age of 64. So this Gerhard Henry Probst was born about 1806!!!

Until now, we know that Henry Probst's wife's name was Mary and they had five children:
1. Eliza, born abt. 1839 in Ohio.
2. Maria Ann, born Sep 10, 1840 in Indiana, married Hermann Heinrich Wefel.
3. William, born abt. 1848 in Indiana.
4. Daniel Heinrich, born Aug 12, 1852 in Wisconsin, married Anna Marie Maschmeyer.
5. Clara Arina, born Feb 23, 1854 in Wisconsin, married Adam Heinrich Niemann.
The two husbands and the wife of the Probst siblings are related.

Still, we couldn't find Friedrich but I was sure that if I would follow back Henry's way from Ohio to Wisconsin, I'll maybe would find his brother.

It was pure chance that Carolyn Naas was looking for Probst, too. She was researching the former owners of her brother's house. There's an incription on the wooden lintel above the front door of this house:

"1850 F. Probst and M. E. Probst born Wiegmann 14. Oct"
"God save this house and all who go in and out."

While searching the web for F. Probst, Carolyn found my message that I had posted at ancestry.com. By now it's prooved that this F. Probst is the one I was looking for, for his burial entry gived his birth date and place correctly.

So that is what we know about Friedrich Probst by now:
He died Mar 23, 1890 in Aurora, Indiana and he married Feb 7, 1839 in Cincinnati, Ohio, Anna Marie Elisabeth Wichmann, born Sep 20, 1816 in Hunteburg, Germany, died Nov 11, 1895 in Aurora.
Their marriage was blesses with nine children:
1. Mary Louise, born abt. 1840 in Ohio, married Henry A. Kassebaum.
2. Anna M. or Eliza, born abt. 1842 in Indiana.
3. Catharine Maria, born Sep 14, 1844 in Indiana, died Sep 21, 1845.
4. Emma/Emily Elise or Anna, born Aug 29, 1846, died Aug 11, 1921 in Aurora.
5. John William, born abt. 1849 in Indiana.
6. Henry J., born Jun 13, 1851 in Ripley Co., IN, died Jul 1, 1894 in Aurora, married Mary Bannagel.
7. Catharine Louisa/Lucy, born Jun 20, 1853 in Indiana, died May 5, 1930 in Indiana, married John Herman Fisse.
8. Julia Anna, born Dec 23, 1856, married Herman Schulte.
9. George C., born Apr 19, 1858.
Seven of these nine children survived their father.

In January 1861, Henry Probst wrote down his last will. Maybe he was ill for he died a month later. At the time this last will was written, only three children of Henry Probst were still alive.

Here is his last will:
